23rd Kagyu Gunchö Commences Today

22 Dec 2022, SILIGURI: The 23rd Kagyu Gunchö was inaugurated today at Bokar Shedra Ober Chimmi Ling, Damdim, near Siliguri, West Bengal, India.

This Gunchö, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa will bestow teachings on the Thirty Verses as well as a transmission of Gampopa’s Collected Works given by His Eminence Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche.

Monks from Kagyu shedras [monastic universities] across India and Nepal have gathered in the Gunchö to engage in a month of intensive study and vigorous debate. This annual event is called the Gunchö, a Tibetan word which means ‘winter dharma’. This is its twenty third year.

As per the wishes of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, this Gunchö is being funded by the Gyalwang Karmapa’s Kun Kyong Charitable Trust. All previous Gunchös were funded by the office of His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa.

The responsibility of organising the practicalities of the Gunchö rotates between the shedras. This year’s organiser is Bokar Shedra Ober Chimmi Ling, based in Damdim, near Siliguri, West Bengal, India.
